PEM Nuts #2-56 through 3/8-16 are hardware pieces that press-fit into a hole in sheet metal, and are designed to lock in place when enough pressure is applied for the material to flow into the grooves. Also known as swage nuts or self-clinching nuts, these are often referred to by the PEM brand name from Penn Engineering & Manufacturing Corp, though they may be used generically for similar products from any manufacturer. Made of hard materials like stainless steel and inserted into pre-drilled holes in softer ductile materials such as aluminum, swage nuts permanently anchor themselves through a process where the shank's serrated clinching ring is forced into the softer material, causing it to plastically deform (swage) into the recess in the shank. This locks the nut into place while the knurling on the clinching ring prevents rotation after installation. This method is popular for adding strong, load-bearing threads to thin sheet metal.
