Swords in Rock is a historic memorial situated in the Hafrsfjord neighborhood of Madla, a borough within Stavanger city limits in Rogaland County, Norway. The monument was crafted by renowned sculptor Fritz Røed from Bryne and officially unveiled by King Olav V of Norway in 1983. Three gleaming bronze swords rise 10 meters tall into the air, firmly planted into a small hillside adjacent to the fjord. These imposing statues commemorate the pivotal Battle of Hafrsfjord, which tradition holds took place there in 872, when mighty King Harald Fairhair unified Norway under his rule. The largest sword boldly represents triumphant Harald, while the two smaller swords symbolize the defeated petty kings. This enduring monument also embodies peace, as the solid rock ensures the swords will forever remain securely planted, never to be removed.
