According to legend, two cunning elders spied on Susanna as she bathed in her garden, having dismissed her attendants, and were consumed by lust for this beautiful woman. When Susanna returns home, they confront her, threatening to expose her unless she agrees to their sinister demands. Refusing to be intimidated, Susanna is arrested and faces execution for alleged promiscuity when Daniel, a young prophet, intervenes, demanding that the elders be questioned before an innocent life is taken. After being separated, the two men are rigorously cross-examined about the details of their tale but ultimately disagree on the specifics, including the tree under which Susanna supposedly met her lover.
