The Sutherland, codename (Sazārando), emerged from Japan/Area 11's occupation as a successor to its predecessor, RPI-13 Sutherland's earlier design laid out by its forerunner, the Glasgow model RPI-11. In several respects, the new model has enhanced qualities that significantly differentiate it from its previous design. Although considered superior, a major portion of Glasgow's effectiveness stemmed from Britain's unmatched advantage in numbers and economy over Japan, as well as its exclusive focus on battling tanks and other traditional combat vehicles; this proved to be a critical shortcoming, resulting from the overwhelming success itself, because rival countries such as China Federation and EU promptly started seriously pursuing advanced Knightmare technology. The design of Sutherland thus aimed at the potential of encounters between these powerful mecha themselves in battle. Its layout was later modified into RPI-209 Gloucester anti-Knightmare system for improved combat performance. Multiple Knights within resistance groups like the Black Knights fell into enemy hands through various means, with a high probability of either being stolen or defecting from official factions by that point during season one's timeline. Despite getting overshadowed in operational statistics by the RPI-209 model in later events after the Great Uprising took place one full year afterwards still seeing massive operational numbers used consistently within those combat engagements still employed large number.
