I've been fascinated with the idea of producing multi-color models using a single-color printer for quite some time now. People were able to pause their prints, switch out filaments mid-print, and create some really interesting effects. I decided to experiment and found that it wasn't as hard as I thought. Some models work better than others, so it's worth noting that anything with distinct layers can look fantastic in multiple colors. I decided to design a model specifically for multi-color printing. The model I created was inspired by an Alex Ross' painting of Superman from the Kingdom Come miniseries set in the future of an alternate DC universe. His work is absolutely stunning (google Kingdom Come if you haven't seen it). I translated the richly detailed, full color rendering into a printable image using layers and colors to simulate depth and complexity. I created an image with 5 colors: white, black, silver, red, and blue. Then, I converted the image to a vector-based SVG file and imported it into Blender so that I could make it 3D. I carefully extruded each individual 'piece' so that various components of the model would be printed in specific colors. If you decide to print this, please post your Makes! I'd love to see them. Also, let me know if you've played around with multi-color printing before.
