## Super Nova ### Interlocking Puzzle by Stewart Coffin (STC #14) Assemble six distinct pieces into a polyhedral shape as shown on the cover photo. This is a significantly more challenging variant of Coffin's earlier design, _Nova_. Like _Nova_, it is an extension of basic _Sirius_ geometry. But whereas _Nova_ extends _Sirius_ symmetrically, _Super Nova_ is highly asymmetric, making assembly much less obvious and more confusing. Coffin described this puzzle: "It has the same assembled shape as _Nova #8_ - the second stellation of the rhombic dodecahedron. With six dissimilar non-symmetrical pieces, it becomes a true puzzle." There are two distinct solutions; see if you can find them both! ### Printing Instructions Print one copy of `coffin.super-nova.bases.stl` and six copies of `coffin.super-nova.tips.stl`. Use one filament color for the bases and another (different) color for the tips. Then snap the tips onto the bases (before attempting to solve the puzzle). The pieces are assembled using "snap joints": simply snap male and female connectors into place. If they come out too loose, reinforce with a few drops of superglue, but this usually isn't necessary. The joints are designed to be printed without supports. Note that there are two distinct tip types that are mirror images of each other. To ensure proper assembly, mark the male joints on the tips with "A" or "B", and match them with corresponding female joints on the bases, also marked with "A" or "B". ### The Printable Puzzle Project The [Printable Puzzle Project](https://www.puzzlehub.org/ppp) aims to make high-quality open-source models of many puzzle designs available. All our models are posted with permission from their designers and licensed for non-commercial use only. Anyone may print copies for personal use, but selling or monetizing them is not permitted. Our puzzles are modeled using the open-source [puzzlecad](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3198014) library. The `.scad` file is included with this model; you can modify its design parameters as desired. More information on how to do this can be found in the PPP Puzzle Modeling tutorial. ### About the Designer Stewart Coffin has been called "the most outstanding designer and maker of interlocking puzzles." He is credited with over four hundred designs, pioneered numerous ingenious puzzle forms, and written extensively about puzzle design and craftsmanship. More information on Coffin, along with many printable models of his designs, can be found on the Stewart Coffin Puzzles overview page. Happy puzzling!
