To obtain European-style SNES buttons on an American system, I modified my Super NES controller by inserting new buttons (A, B, X, and Y). Using pliers, pinch the tabs to make them thin for a proper fit. My customized buttons were created using a school Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printer.
