SUP - fin
thingiverse
I wanted to take my 9'' fanatic fly air SUP out on the lake, but the fin setup that comes with it out of the box is made for wave-riding. So I decided to print a bigger fin to paddle straighter. The fin prints in six individual parts due to the Makerbot Replicator 2's limitations, and three make one side. Two grid parts click onto their respective base parts for added rigidity. After gluing them together, I added a colored sheet of plastic foil for extra flair. Then I covered it with three layers of fiberglass fabric and epoxy glue. Next came hours of hand-sanding to get the job done right. Finally, I finished it off with some clear spray paint. The front guiding edge looked messy due to warping during the 3D printing process, so I added a layer of red spray paint for extra style. To attach it to the fin box, I reused the brass pin and pieces from an old broken fin. It fits snugly in the standard "US Box". The overall shape is inspired by one of Future Fins' designs. Printer Settings: Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2 Infill: 50% Notes: A heated print bed would greatly improve the print quality, reducing warping and making assembly much easier. Post-Printing: It took a lot of gluing and sanding to get everything just right.
