Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a legendary figure born from ancient Chinese folklore that dates back to the Song dynasty. He stars in the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West and appears in many subsequent adaptations and retellings. In the epic tale, he transforms into a powerful monkey born from stone after mastering Taoist techniques that unlock his supernatural abilities. After defying heaven's authority and being imprisoned beneath a mountain by the Buddha, he embarks on a perilous journey with Monk Tang Sanzang to retrieve sacred Buddhist scriptures from the distant "West". Sun Wukong possesses unmatched physical prowess, effortlessly lifting his massive 13,500-jīn staff weighing an astonishing 7,960 kilograms. He also boasts incredible speed, capable of covering 108,000 li in a single somersault equivalent to traversing 21,675 kilometers or 13,468 miles. The Monkey King also wields the ability to transform into 72 different earthly forms, allowing him to take on various animal and object guises at will. As a master martial artist, Sun Wukong excels in combat, defeating even the most skilled warriors of heaven with ease. Each strand of his hair possesses magical properties that can be transformed into identical clones of himself or diverse objects, animals, and tools. He also commands an arsenal of spells to command the winds, part water, conjure protective barriers against malevolent spirits, and even freeze both mortals and deities alike.
