Sun finder for solar telescope

To accurately point your solar telescope at the sun without risking eye damage, attach the sun finder to a standard Telrad base already present on most telescopes. To use it, position the plate with the hole roughly centered on the sun in your view. Move the scope until the light passing through the hole falls onto the lower plate. For the first time, insert a 35mm square piece of paper into the slot in the lower plate. Carefully find the sun in your scope while using a safe solar filter to protect your eyes. Then, use a pencil to draw a circle around the spot of light on the paper. Subsequent searches for the sun will then become much quicker. If you need to re-collimate or realign the sun finder at any point, flip the paper over or erase the old pencil mark and start again.
