Sun and Planets to scale update 1.28.2018

thingiverse

This shows the sun and planets to scale. Earth is positioned at the third planet from left. The diameter of Jupiter is a staggering 11.20 times the diameter of earth, making it appear even more massive because its volume is 1,403 (=11.2^3 cubed) times the volume of our home planet. I have made corrections to the diameter of the sun in file planets_5_160415aa.stl per stefanpwinc's comment. This file does not include Pluto. Update September 1, 2018: A new file named planets_(21)_w_pluto_r1_180109.stl includes Pluto per keebie81's and wbphelps' request. Pluto's diameter is a mere 2370 kilometers. Our moon's diameter is 3476 kilometers, making Pluto appear incredibly small. This object was created in BlocksCAD https://www.blockscad3d.com/community/projects/70342. Update February 28, 2018: I have added the BlocksCAD and SCAD files (.xml and .scad). Enjoy! ======== For those who would like to explore the geometry: Reference: pages 6 and 7 from https://www.nasa.gov/pdf/622145main_SSML1Answr.pdf Diameters in kilometers: d_mer_km = 4878; d_ven_km = 12104; d_earth_km = 12755; d_mar_km = 6790; d_jup_km = 142796; d_sat_km = 120660; d_sat_rings_km = 2 * 136775; d_ura_km = 51118; d_nep_km = 49528; d_plu_km = 2370; d_sun_km = 1392600; Scale factor: 2.25
