Summer at the Louvre, Paris, France

This sculpture showcases a woman proudly holding what looks like crops from last summer's harvest. Created by the renowned French sculptor Pierre Le Gros, this piece is quintessentially Baroque Rome. Nowadays, his name is often spelled Legros, but he always signed as Le Gros; to differentiate him from his father, Pierre Le Gros the Elder, a fellow sculptor, he is frequently referred to as 'the Younger' or 'Pierre II'. The dramatic flair of his work and its Italian setting make him more an Italian sculptor than French. Despite being relatively unknown to the general public today, he was Rome's leading sculptor for nearly two decades before being surpassed towards the end of his life by the classicizing Camillo Rusconi.
