The Sumatra native is a rare subspecies of Panthera tigris found solely on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Declared Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List in 2008, the estimated 441 to 679 remaining individuals show no population over 50 members and are continuing downward trends.\n\nSurviving on the Sunda Islands alone is the indigenous tiger species as both the Bali and Javan tigers are extinct. Mitochondrial DNA tests confirm distinct differences between the Sumatra tigers and mainland tiger populations. Sequences from these tests include 34 tiger individuals confirming their unique distinction within felid taxonomy.\n\nAs of 2017, revised tiger classification places Sumatran as P. t. sondaica both for those that are living and the ones now extinct, by members of the Cat Specialist Group who created a task force just to make these taxonomic adjustments in tiger families classifications.
