Historically speaking, sugar production in the Netherlands developed more slowly than in the rest of Europe. The first Dutch sugar factory was established in Zevenbergen as far back as 1858. Approximately a decade later, by around 1874, there were twenty-three such factories up and running. Advances in technical and chemical engineering brought an increase in production, resulting in several facilities eventually being forced to close their doors. Fast-forwarding to the year 1890, North Brabant became known as the Dutch province with the highest number of sugar mills at a staggering twenty-one. These were located across different towns including Bergen op Zoom, Roosendaal, Zevenbergen, and others such as Oosterhout, Steenbergen, Etten-Leur, and Geertruidenberg. On the other hand, some manufacturing facilities in places like Sas van Gent also rose from two up to two locations. Puttershoek saw factory foundation; there were further locations at Groningen. Unfortunately, however due to economies of scale gradually closing occurred at numerous other mills including in Zevenbergen.
