I'd been itching to tackle a project with my 3D printer long before it finally arrived. I stumbled upon a website - jthatch.com/Terrain2STL/ - that allows users to generate .stl files from topographical map data, and the idea for a 3D map of my hometown's landscape was born. Feeling homesick for Sudbury's unique geology, I decided to create a digital replica of the area's terrain. Sudbury, Ontario, is a place shaped by history - its landscape molded by a massive meteor strike approximately 1,849 million years ago, as recorded on Wikipedia in the Sudbury Basin article.
