A nuclear submarine is a powerful underwater vessel that runs on a nuclear reactor. The benefits of using a nuclear-powered submarine are quite substantial when compared to conventional diesel-electric submarines. Nuclear propulsion, being completely independent of air, allows the submarine to stay submerged for extended periods without surfacing, which is necessary for conventional subs. A large amount of energy generated by a nuclear reactor enables nuclear submarines to operate at high speeds for long durations; and the lengthy interval between refuelings provides a virtually unlimited range, with only factors such as food restocking or other consumables limiting voyage times. Current nuclear submarine designs can last 25 years without needing any fuel replenishment. On the other hand, conventional subs are limited by their stored electric battery power, which means they can only stay submerged for several days at slow speeds and a few hours at top speed. Recent advancements in air-independent propulsion have somewhat mitigated this disadvantage. The high cost of nuclear technology restricts its deployment to relatively few military powers worldwide. Some of the most severe nuclear and radiation accidents occurred due to Soviet submarine mishaps.
