Subaru Legacy Air-Box Plug
thingiverse
Fans of the 4th-Generation Subaru Legacy and Outback often remove the resonator from the stock air intake box at the bottom because they can hear the turbocharger more clearly and get a little more growl at full throttle. However, this creates an opening for dirt to enter the filter. After purchasing a car with a de-resonated intake box, I wanted to plug that hole. Printer Settings Printer: MendelMax 2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: .4 mm Infill: 20% Notes: I printed this in PLA without a solid bottom surface so the bottom layers are just perimeter and infill. This gives sufficient adhesion, and it can be pried off of my blue-taped print bed without any cursing. Post-Printing Installation Assuming you've already removed the resonator, this is easiest to install from below. Jack up the car (USE JACK STANDS!). You'll have to remove a couple of plastic rivets and pull down on the section of splash-guard on the passenger side of the car, just forward of the front wheel. You'll see the hole in the air box staring at you. Just reach up, align the tabs on the plug with the slots in the fitting, and push this thing into place. It should be a tight fit. If you haven't removed the resonator, you'll have to lift the air box out from above. This isn't rocket science, but I won't describe that procedure here. Just grab some tools and take care of it. How I Designed This Design notes: It's basically just a cylinder hollowed out by a truncated cone. There are tiny rectangular-solid tabs to mate up with slots in the bottom of the air box, and a flanged base to prevent pushing it in so far that it can't be removed. There is a bracket on the air box to hold the resonator in place with a bolt, and my first draft of this part included a corresponding bracket for this plug as well. However, the plug is so light that the mounting tabs are more than sufficient to hold it securely, so I commented out that part of the model. The code for the bracket is still there if you want to try that approach, but be aware that it hasn't been tested for accuracy.
