The Sukhoi Flagon, a twin-jet supersonic interceptor, was created by Soviet engineers. Entering service in 1965, it became one of the leading frontline designs that lasted well into the 1990s. The Su-15 was specifically designed to replace older models like the Sukhoi Su-11 and Sukhoi Su-9, which were rapidly becoming outdated as NATO introduced advanced strategic bombers.
