The Sukhoi Su-9, NATO named Fishpot, was a Soviet single-engine jet interceptor craft developed during the Korean War. It originated from aerodynamic studies by TsAGI and first flew as T-405 prototype in 1956. Simultaneously developed with Su-7 Fitter, both were showcased at Tushino Aviation Day on 24 June 1956. The Su-9 entered service in 1959, and about 1,100 aircraft were produced before retirement during the '70s. Some were retained as test vehicles or remote-piloted drones. It was succeeded by upgraded Su-11 and superior Su-15 Flagon, MiG-25 Foxbat. Its combat record remains unknown, possibly involved in classified recon interceptions. A Su-9 was reported to attempt ramming Francis Gary Powers' U-2 on Soviet soil on May 1, 1960, but failed due to fuel and speed differences. In September 1959, a modified Su-9 set a world record for absolute height at 28,852 m, which was later broken by an F4H-1 Phantom in December of the same year.
