It played a crucial role in the final year of World War II and remained in service for many years after, used by Soviet allies worldwide. The SU-85 (Samohodnaya ustanovka 85) was a powerful Soviet self-propelled gun employed during World War II, built on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank. Previous Soviet self-propelled guns were designed to serve as either assault guns or tank destroyers; the SU-85 fell into the latter category. The designation 85 signifies the bore size of the vehicle's armament, an 85 mm D-5S gun. Early in World War II, Soviet tanks like the T-34 and KV-1 possessed adequate firepower to defeat any German tanks available at that time. By autumn 1942, Soviet forces encountered the new German Tiger tank, with armor too thick for the 76.2 mm guns used in the T-34 and KV tanks to penetrate safely from a distance. The Soviet command also received reports of the Panther tank, which was still under development and boasted thicker armor than the Tiger; both marked significant advancements in German tank design. Although the Panther didn't see combat until July 1943, the emergence of these new German vehicles indicated that the Red Army needed a more powerful main gun for its armored units to remain effective.
