Study in ABS Surface Finish
thingiverse
This experiment showcases printed ABS surface finishes treated with acetone. The first photo displays an untreated Yoda Lite print, revealing a rough finish with visible layers. In the second photo, a quick 10-second acetone bath results in a smoother finish that hides the layers partially and gives a "wet" appearance. Rinsing the part with water after acetone treatment led to white discoloration and a shredded look (pictured third). A fourth photo demonstrates a gradient of immersion time, highlighting the transition from no grid-marks to fully marked surface. The bottom surface, being hollow, became weaker after the bath. Overall, a brief acetone treatment can enhance the polished appearance of printed models; however, air drying is recommended over water rinsing. Feel free to share your thoughts on surface finishing!
