Human beings often fail to realize that a snowflake can be either a solitary ice crystal or an accumulation of ice crystals which plummet through the Earth's atmosphere. Initially, they begin as singular snow crystals which emerge when minuscule supercooled cloud droplets freeze. Snowflakes come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. Intricate forms develop as the flake traverses varying temperature and humidity zones, resulting in individual snowflakes that are almost always distinctive in structure. Snowflakes encased in rime form balls known as graupel. The white coloration of snowflakes is due to the diffused reflection of the entire spectrum of light by the small crystal facets, despite being composed entirely of clear ice.
