Human beings describe snowflakes as singular ice crystals or collections of ice crystals that plummet through the Earth's atmosphere. They originate from snow crystals, which develop when tiny supercooled cloud droplets freeze in place. Snowflakes come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. As the flake moves through areas with varying temperatures and humidity levels, complex patterns emerge, making individual snowflakes almost always one-of-a-kind in their structure. When covered in rime, they form balls known as graupel. Snowflakes appear white due to the diffuse reflection of all light by the small crystal facets, despite being made entirely of clear ice.
