Snowflakes take shape as either solitary ice crystals or intricate clusters of ice crystals drifting through the Earth's atmosphere. They start out as delicate snow crystals, formed when tiny supercooled cloud droplets are frozen into existence. Snowflakes come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, with complex patterns emerging as they navigate varying temperature and humidity zones. As a result, each individual snowflake is remarkably unique in its structure. In some cases, snowflakes encased in rime form compact balls known as graupel. Despite being composed entirely of clear ice, snowflakes appear white due to the diffuse reflection of light across their small crystal facets.
