A flake of snow is either a single crystal of ice or an assortment of ice crystals falling through the Earth's atmosphere. They start as ice crystals which develop when tiny supercooled cloud droplets freeze up quickly. Snowflakes come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, with complex shapes emerging as the flake moves through different temperature and humidity zones, making each individual snowflake almost always unique in its structure. When surrounded by rime, snowflakes take on a round shape known as graupel. Despite being made of clear ice, snowflakes appear white because they diffuse the whole spectrum of light with their small crystal facets.
