Snowflakes take shape either as solitary ice crystals or clusters of crystals that plummet through Earth's atmosphere. Forming initially as snow crystals, they develop from minute supercooled cloud droplets that freeze in place. Snowflakes vary greatly in size and appearance. As a flake navigates diverse temperature and humidity zones, intricate shapes emerge, making each individual snowflake almost exclusively one-of-a-kind in its design. Some snowflakes encased in rime form round balls known as graupel. Despite being constructed from transparent ice, snowflakes appear white due to the diffuse reflection of light by their numerous crystal facets across the entire spectrum.
