Following the end of the Cold War, some theorists believed that existing U.S. armored vehicles were not well-suited to lower-intensity missions, prompting the development of a new armored fighting vehicle designed for combat in non-traditional environments. However, vehicles derived from the LAV III and MOWAG Piranha have proven vulnerable to RPG-7 rockets, necessitating the improvisation of slat armor to counter anti-tank threats, while main battle tanks have demonstrated resistance to all but one rare type of RPG-7 rocket. Canada had liquidated half its fleet of Leopard 1s in the early 2000s, planning to replace them with the airmobile Mobile Gun System, but reversed this decision after sending Leopards to Afghanistan in 2006 and acquiring 100 surplus Leopard 2 main battle tanks from the Netherlands for quick deployment. Full-rate production of the Mobile Gun System has been indefinitely deferred as of 2012. The U.S. Army allocated nine Mobile Gun Systems to a battalion, while Stryker Brigades were initially equipped with 27 Mobile Gun Systems per brigade in 2013, but this number is being reduced to 10 due to budget cuts. The Army purchased 142 Mobile Gun Systems in total, losing three in combat. A three-vehicle MGS platoon operates organically within a Stryker infantry company, providing support to rifle platoons as needed. The Battlefield series of first-person shooter video games began with its debut game, Battlefield 1942, released on Microsoft Windows and OS X in 2002. Developed by Swedish company DICE and published by American company Electronic Arts, the series emphasizes large maps, teamwork, and vehicle warfare over traditional gameplay mechanics.
