String winder
thingiverse
This text spinner is designed for creating coils of string using a figure 8 pattern, also known as a mountaineer's coil. It fits a 6mm square chopstick in its holes, although it's not parametric, there are enough steps in the Blender model to make modifications easily. The model includes layers containing the final meshed part, winding posts and original bezier curves, which makes it easy to modify for various posts. An updated version with larger size has been uploaded for those with big hands. For winding, insert the posts firmly into the holes, wind the string over each post in the same direction to create a figure 8 pattern until the posts are almost full. Push the loops down further and keep winding until no more string can fit or the end is reached. Remove one or both posts carefully while holding the coil together. Pull out a few feet of string from the narrow end, wrap it around the coil several times to secure, and tuck in the end under the windings. To use the string, pull from the other end without any tangles. To rebuild for another size post, create a new post model, duplicate the part from layer 3, adjust extrusion thickness if necessary, convert it into mesh, and use boolean tools to subtract the posts from the part.
