String "Climbing" Mechanism
cults3d
String Climbing Mechanism is a clever open frame dual spool string mechanism that creates the illusion of climbing, commonly found in vintage toys still made today. This ingenious mechanism consists of just six unique parts (eight total), requiring only embroidery floss and glue to assemble. Once built, it showcases how these classic toys, some over 100 years old, actually work. I've successfully incorporated this mechanism into several toy designs, with the first one featured here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1829317. A prototype video is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INctzet3oAo, and a video showcasing various string climbing toys can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z92M0Gh4rGo. This design was created using Sketchup Make 2016 and printed in PLA on an Ultimaker 2 Extended.
