When World War II erupted, Oświęcim was absorbed into the Third Reich's territory. The town was renamed Auschwitz and Polish street names were swiftly replaced with German ones. This street sign was discovered during an archeological excavation of the Great Synagogue site in 2004. It reveals a stark picture of how the invading Germans eradicated Oświęcim's pre-war identity, along with that of its residents. Time and place of creation: 1939, Oświęcim Inventory number: MŻ 51 Museum: Auschwitz Jewish Centre https://muzea.malopolska.pl/en/objects-list/2064 http://muzea.malopolska.pl/en/o-nas Digitalisation: Digitalisation was handled by RDW MIC, as part of the Virtual Małopolska project.
