This 3D statue features a full model of Ryu, whose name was inspired by designer Takashi Nishiyama's due to the on'yomi reading of the character, which translates to Ryū . The concept for Ryu's Hadouken energy attack was based on the wave motion gun from Space Battleship Yamato, a sci-fi anime series that Nishiyama watched during the 1970s. Other techniques in the first Street Fighter game were actually taken from martial arts moves that were exaggerated to suit Ryu's character. Because he was the sole playable character in the original game, his designer, Manabu Takemura, wanted Ryu to be instantly recognizable. The decision to include him in Street Fighter II came due to his presence in the first game, embodying the idea of a Japanese martial artist. As the series progressed, the design evolved into something more muscular, aligning with this concept, and the iconic white gi - considered Ryu's defining feature by the development team - was intended to clearly identify him as a karate master from afar. According to Capcom Research and Development head Noritaka Funamizu in an interview with Game On!, Ryu remains one of the most beloved characters among American audiences alongside Zangief and Guile. Street Fighter IV prepared Kyle Hebert for the return of Evil Ryu's persona. Ansah talked about Ryu and Ken's story from Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, stating that a good analogy for Ryu is his internal competition with himself, whereas Ken drives forward through fierce competition.
