Street Fighter II was by far the most popular one-on-one fighting game that ever came out, unlike its predecessor Street Fighter (1987) which only allowed players to choose from three characters - Ryu, Ken, and E. Honda. SFII let you pick eight fighters: Ryu, Ken, E. Honda, Zangief, Dhalsim, Guile, Chun-Li, and the one and only Blanka. Thanks to Final Fight's massive success in the US, Capcom decided to bet big on something new within the fighting genre. By building upon Street Fighter's mechanics, they created a diverse cast of characters and crisp animations that Noritaka Funamizu, one of its creators, cited as top priority: delivering good graphics and snappy animations. Balance among characters wasn't their main focus. Released in 1991, it became a global phenomenon at arcades everywhere, with sales of around 60,000 Street Fighter II machines generating millions in quarters. The Super Nintendo version caused another tidal wave, selling nearly nine million copies.
