Strategos

Standing male figures, depicted in heroic nudity, were a common sight throughout ancient Athens' 5th century B.C. These imposing statues typically featured a spear resting on the shoulder, a bearded face, long flowing hair and a distinctive Corinthian helmet. Such an image could well represent an accomplished Athenian general (strategos) who had distinguished himself during the tumultuous Peloponnesian War, which raged from 431 to 404 B.C. A Roman copy of a 4th century B.C. bronze original, dating back to the 2nd century A.D., remains a testament to this enduring artistic tradition.
