Stranger Things Fiber Optic Lamp

15-04-2018 The Stranger Things desk light project is now complete! Two new pictures have been added, and a video update shows the lamp finished. The project started in 2017, but completion was delayed due to waiting for a plasma ball and power switch. This DIY project requires some building experience and soldering skills, but it can be made with these basics. Here are three sections of information: 1-Tips for Building and Covering the Case 2-BOM: (Bill of Materials) 3-Final Notes 1-Tips Glue side plates that need to fit together using CA glue. Place them on a flat surface, then use an activator for a fast bond. To get a smooth-looking surface on flat 3D printed parts like these, use matte/flat picture paper (not glossy). Use Bizon Tix on the 3D part and paper to glue them in place, which also helps give the case strength. You can use almost any type of paint on the paper, but make sure to apply at least two coats of primer or regular paint. The paper absorbs a lot of paint initially, making it look funky. The red background behind the text is made from packaging material 'blister case.' Any transparent plastic will do, and you need to paint it red using common paints. Red LEDs behind this background light it up. 2-BOM Bill of Materials 6x 3mm Red LEDs for the Background (I used blue and red, but only red works better) Resistors for LED 2x USB Plasma Balls - These are cheap to find on eBay, around 6€ each 5v PSU (phone charger) - Minimal 1A power 1x Power Jack 3 Pin Terminals - DC Power 5.5 mm x 2.5mm 1x USB Cable for Power Jack and PSU 5 meters (16 feet) of power cable should be enough to connect everything. 1x On-Off Switch 8x Magnets to hold the backdoor in place or use another method, as magnets are not great for this. Fiber Optic for the light - I used 0.75mm; you can find a roll on eBay or Aliexpress, or just buy a cheap fiber optic kids' toy lamp and use that. RGB LEDs can be found on eBay; make sure to choose slow-blinking and double-leg options, which are ready to use and only need a resistor. https://youtu.be/SQfb2vlhGtc ***WARNING: You must disassemble the USB Plasma Balls to fit them in the case. Plasma Balls use HIGH VOLTAGE and can be fatal. So don't try this!***
