Straight line extruder and sensor
thingiverse
I've created a new extruder body based on danid87's design - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2604173 - with an integrated filament sensor housing, specifically tailored for relocated extruders that won't fit in the stock location. It should work perfectly for top mounting or moving it to the end of the X axis arm as I've done. To implement this design, I printed out the extruder relocator bracket from PENBERIC - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2672088 - and turned my extruder 90 degrees so that the Bowden tube exits upwards and arcs over to the hot end. I'll be pulling filament up through a hole next to the printer from my drybox once I get my cabinet built, which should provide lower drag than turning the filament vertical and then back horizontal with pulleys. Of course, it will need plenty of supports; print as oriented in the attached screenshot. I find that using Cura with a 10% support density and dense support interfaces turned on leaves a nice enough surface and fairly easy to remove with a .4mm air gap. Update: The final revision is V3. Printed one out, and the problems from before have been fixed. In the slicer, I noticed that V2 somehow ended up with a tiny space between the switch box and the extruder plate, which would have made it weak. Updated and printed out V3, and it's fine; I'm calling it ready to go.
