I was looking for a solution to help reduce the risk of my 3D printer burning my house down. I found a 3D printer farm that mounted Stovetop Fire Stop units on the shelving above his 3D printers. I don't have shelving above my 3D printer so I came up with this solution. I made this to install to the cover for my QIDI X-Plus and X-Plus II. I always print PETG so the covers are always on. The mount consists of a threaded top and bottom piece. The Fire Stop unit slides up into the top mount from the thread side. You must drill a 3 3/4" - 4" hole in the cover using a hole saw. Clean the burrs (easier when it is still warm), I used a sharp knife. Place the top mount with fire stop installed on over the hole and install the bottom mount piece up through the hole to thread onto the top mount. I am novice at this so I am sure someone can improve on this to function more smoothly. The Stovetop Fire Stop unit's are available on Amazon, I paid $60 for two. They are intended for installation above stoves. They are triggered when the fire lites the fuse on the Fire Stop. Dry chemical blasts out the bottom, hopefully extinguishing the fire. I used PETG as it is easy to print and has a higher melting temp than PLA. I can only hope that the fire lights the fuse before the top or the mount melts. I do feel a little better running my printer when not home or overnight.
