We have a very large balcony, but the way our handrail is built means we can't use off-the-shelve flowerbox holders to hold anything. Also, since we wanted the flowerbox to stand ON TOP of the handrail (as opposed of hanging off of it) we needed to make sure we don't kill someone accidentially by falling flowerboxes, hence the protection hooks ^^ The design is such that the flowerbox actually does not touch the handrail, preventing moisture from building up under the box that could be turning into mud over time
