Stools were among the first forms of furniture designed for sitting down. They share a striking resemblance to chairs and are essentially just that - minus the arms and back. Stools consist of a single seat meant for one person, resting on a base supported by anywhere from one to four sturdy legs. The defining characteristic that sets stools apart from their chair cousins is the absence of armrests and backs - at least in their early incarnations. Variants with one, two or even five legs do exist, earning them some rather loose monikers like "backless chairs." Some modern interpretations of stools have opted to include a back, but these departures from tradition are relatively rare.
