Stools have ancient origins as one of the earliest forms of wooden seating. Early designs include Percy M or Gothic stools, simple turned stools, and Windsor chairs. The simplest stool featured a solid plank seat with three legs set in using mortise and tenon joints. Green woodworking techniques were used to ensure the joints stayed tight as the seat dried. Stools evolved into joined stools in the 17th century, utilizing joinery for more efficient use of timber. Three-legged stools were commonly used by farm workers milking cows during this time.
