People have been using stools for centuries as one of the earliest forms of furniture designed for sitting. In many ways, stools closely resemble chairs. Typically, a stool consists of a single seat meant for one person, without any back or armrests (as is often the case with early designs), and rests on a base of either three or four sturdy legs. One key difference between a stool and a chair is the absence of arms and a back in most stools. Research suggests that triangular-shaped seats are not as comfortable for humans to sit on compared to square or other designed shapes. Another advantage of having a four-legged design is that if one leg becomes damaged, the chair can still be somewhat usable, whereas a three-legged stool needs all its legs intact to function properly.
