Culture: Ancient Christian Material: Stone Dimensions: Length 8.4cm Width 4.5cm Accession Number: HCA 688 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick This fragment is a partially complete mold used for casting small items of jewelry. It is a rectangular stone with one broken end, featuring a unique design on its surface. One face boasts two valves for buttons or pin heads in the shape of spirals. Each valve is deeply cut to a rounded point and has three concentric steps. A third valve's outline is barely visible. The central valve bears an etched image of a large ring. Two valves display the beginnings of incised pouring channels. This type of casting mold dates back from Prehistory to Medieval times in Ireland, often found in ringforts and crannógs.
