Stone seated figure of Xiuhtecuhtli

The Aztecs envisioned heat and fire in multifaceted forms. Blazing sunbeams could spark devastating droughts and famines. From the earth's fiery core, Xiuhtecuhtli, the Fire God, unleashed torrents of molten lava through volcanic eruptions, blurring lines with Huehueteotl, the ancient deity. Xiuhtecuhtli is deeply associated with bold young warriors and leadership, often depicted in Aztec codices wearing a fiery serpent on his back. This figure proudly wears a pleated fan crafted from bark paper at the back of its head. Faint remnants of yellow pigment and a black line around the eyes still stand out. This sculpture may have served as a temple brazier.
