A pair of 17th-century stone plaques with a poignant inscription above the arch of the courtyard gate outside Aldobrandeschi Castle, Arcidosso, Grosseto, Tuscany, catches the eye. The lower one boldly states: “Pena scudi 2 a chi parla a prigioni e di notte raddoppia e si crederà alla semplice relazione dell’accusatore,” which translates to a stern warning for visitors to the castle jails, specifying that speaking with prisoners at night comes with a steep price.
