Dating back to the early 17th Century, this oval carving proudly showcases the god Sol. It's one of eight panels featuring planetary deities that were originally embedded into the east wall of the walled garden at Edzell Castle in Angus. Commissioned by David Lynsey, these intricate carvings are likely direct copies from engravings created by German artist Georg Pencz, which were featured in contemporary pattern books.
