Stone Lion - The Boskins, Tarleton This statue stands proudly among 4 lion's and 2 sphinxes that were carefully installed on Lion's Bridge. A former Georgian folly and functional bridge on the formal approach to Atherton Hall in Leigh, it has become a beloved local landmark over time. Despite the demolition of Atherton Hall in 1824, Lion's Bridge continued to thrive as a cherished beauty spot, even after its collapse is believed to have occurred in the 1890s. The lion can be seen here in this photograph taken before the bridge's collapse, indicated with the red arrow: Made from Coade Stone, this particular statue has survived relatively well and shows less damage than its counterpart. Recent conservation efforts have included chemical cleaning and restoration work on the base between the paws using sand and cement.
