Skulls and trophy heads project prominently from the stone markers that protrude from ball-court walls. These objects are frequently mistaken for hachas, which is Spanish for "axes." Some could also have served as moulds for making leather attachments that adorned a ball player's waist belt. The hard rubber ball used in the game was often likened to a human head.
