Situated north of Angkor Wat itself, this temple was once at the heart of ancient Angkor Thom city. It is also known as Jayavarman's Temple, a tribute to the Khmer king who commissioned its construction. Its iconic towers with gentle, smiling faces are a defining feature. With over 50 towers surrounding the ruined temple, more than 200 faces display varying levels of erosion and wear. Each face measures four metres high and is aligned towards one of the cardinal directions. They all share the same serene smile, with closed eyes, embodying an all-knowing state of inner peace and possibly even Nirvana. The temple's grounds are also adorned with intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes of land and naval warfare, marketplaces, and the construction of the temple itself.
