Located north of Angkor Wat itself, this temple was once the central hub of the ancient city of Angkor Thom. It's often referred to as Jayavarman's Temple, a tribute to the Khmer king who commissioned its construction. This temple is most famous for its numerous towers adorned with gentle, smiling faces on each side. Approximately 50 towers surround the ruined temple, featuring over 200 faces showcasing varying degrees of deterioration and wear. Each face measures 4 meters high and faces one of the cardinal directions. They all possess the same serene smile, with eyes closed, representing a state of profound inner peace and possibly even Nirvana. The temple is also home to intricate and exquisite bas-reliefs depicting land and naval warfare, market scenes, and others showing the construction of the temple itself.
