Stone Cross Slab, St Andrews Cathedral
sketchfab
The remaining portion of this magnificent cross from St Andrews Cathedral showcases an intricately carved shaft that seamlessly blends Pictish and Biblical motifs. On the bottom right corner, a peculiar figure resembling a fish in shape can be observed. Emerging from its head on the left side is a serpentine creature with a lizard-like appearance, whose body wraps around the stone before curving back to the left side. This creature's mouth perfectly aligns with the top of the human head, much like a cap. A similar monster rises from the human head on the right side, and its body encircles the other side of the stone. These creatures gradually taper in thickness as they ascend, their tails intertwined in an intricate manner. Notably, each has short legs and three-toed feet. On one of these creatures' highest coils, a human foot is firmly planted, while a lion stands proudly in front of the man, situated higher up. This striking imagery vividly depicts the iconic Biblical story of Daniel navigating the Lions’ den. For details on visiting St Andrews Cathedral, please consult our website for more information.
