Millions of Hindus worship and honor cows with great reverence. Hinduism elevates Mother to a divine status, making the cow a sacred animal that provides life-giving milk. The cow is viewed as a nurturing figure, caring for her people. It embodies the earth's bountiful gifts. Lord Krishna, one of the most revered Hindu deities, is often depicted playing his flute but in this sculpture, he offers prayers with his hands clasped together. As a young man, Krishna tended to cows. He is also known as Govinda and Gopala, meaning "cow friend" and "cow protector." For devoted followers, feeding a cow is considered an auspicious act, even while eating breakfast. In the ancient Vedas, cows symbolize wealth and joyful earthly life. The Rig Veda (4.28.1:6) states: "The cows have arrived, bringing us good fortune. May they stay contentedly in our stalls! May they give birth to many-colored calves that provide milk for Indra daily. You make the thin man plump; you bring beauty to the unattractive. Let their pleasant lowing rejoice our homesteads. In our gatherings, we praise your strength."
